Required: Data Warehouse Architect/Analyst/Developer

Duration: 6 month contract with multi-year extensions

Environment: Work to be completed in downtown Edmonton

Rates are negotiable

The Data Warehouse Architect/Analyst/Developer is part of a team responsible for the operations and continued development and enhancement of the Corporate Data Warehouse to ensure clients and stakeholders are provided with high quality data. This team:

Provides ongoing management and operation of the Corporate Data Warehouse, including coordination of data extraction, loading and transforming and ensuring ongoing data integrity and data quality assurance.

Manages and coordinates the acquisition, evaluation, and integration of new data into the Corporate Data Warehouse.

Data is extracted from various data sources such as SQL Server 2000 on Windows 2000/Windows Server 2003, Oracle on UNIX, and ADABAS on z/OS. Necessary transformation, data integration and data quality assurance is performed. The data is then loaded into a data warehouse currently residing in SQL Server 2000 on Windows Server 2003. Current ETL processes are done using a variety of tools and methods such as ADABAS/NATURAL programs, Oracle SQL*Plus, FTP, Visual Basic programs, .bat files, SQL Server stored procedures, SQL Server Enterprise Manager, and SQL Server Data Transformation Services. New ETL processes are being developed using IBM WebSphere DataStage.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Understanding complex data relationships

Integrating similar data from different source systems

Understanding of the importance of data quality, data integrity and data security

Data analysis and evaluation

Business analysis

Corporate Data Warehouse design, construction, testing and management

Data mart analysis, design, construction and testing

Development and maintenance of ETL processes

Problem solving/troubleshooting

Technical writing/documentation

Dealing with clients and team members to resolve issues

Communicating with clients, business analysts, application support analysts, and Information Reporting staff

Information requirements/needs gathering

Analyzing and understanding source systems, business rules and data elements

Providing recommendations as to alternatives to meet the requirements

Performing data analysis to evaluate data being added to the corporate data warehouse and data marts

Creating CDW data models – the entity relationship diagrams and the table and column definitions

Creating database objects (such as tables, views, stored procedures)

Creating multi-dimensional structures (fact tables and corresponding dimensions)

Addressing data integration issues and providing input for potential solutions

Identifying data quality issues by creating scripts to verify the quality of data in the operational systems

Developing data transformation rules

Developing data loading, cleansing and verification procedures

Writing code to extract, transform, correlate, integrate, load and verify data being incorporated into the data warehouse

Capturing business and technical metadata for the CDW data and processes

Testing the procedures and verifying results

Performing impact analysis to determine the impact of proposed changes to existing ETL processes

Documenting operational procedures, data transformations and methodologies

Increasing the quantity and improving the quality of data warehouse documentation; particularly in regard to being more useful to information end users

Increasing the quantity and improving the quality of data mart design and implementation documentation; particularly in regard to being more useful to information end users

Mandatory skills required:

• Architecture Data Architect 2 + years
• Additional Requirements: Experience creating SQL Server stored procedures 2 + years
• Experience creating SQL Server tables and views 2 + years
• Experience developing data models 2 + years
• Experience using SQL Server Query Analyzer and T-SQL 2 + years
• Experience working in a SQL Server environment 2 + years
• Experience working in a Windows operating system environment 2 + years
• Experience working in a data warehouse/business intelligence environment in a development or support role 2 + years
• Experience working on a project through all stages from initiation to implementation 2 + years
• Experience writing documentation (for example, impact analysis, data definitions, technical design specifications, operations manual, test plans) 2 + years
• Experience developing data models 2 + years
