Senior Audit Manager, Professional Practice Group Job in Toronto, Ontario Canada
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Internal Audit Department (Audit) is an integral part of the Bank’s risk management, control and governance processes. With growing complexity of the Bank’s diverse operations, as well as heightened regulatory and compliance framework, expectations of Audit are constantly increasing. This role is within the Professional Practice Group, which supports Audit (and Security & Investigation) in executing its global mandate. The Professional Practice Group has widespread accountabilities across the global audit function, including reporting to the Audit and Conduct Review Committee and Executive Management, audit methodology, training, people strategy initiatives, technology, human resources and administration.
Working with and reporting to the Director, Professional Practice, the incumbent, is responsible for the global audit methodology, the quality assurance program, the global training strategy and will act at the Compliance Officer for Audit. The incumbent will also participate and assist with the annual audit planning process, quarterly and annual reporting to the Audit and Conduct Review Committee and other special projects as they arise. To carry out these responsibilities, the incumbent will collaborate extensively with all members of the Professional Practice Group located in Canada and in Mexico and with the broader Audit Department.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Maintaining the global Audit Department Methodology through:
- Ongoing research and identification of emerging issues that may impact the Audit Department;
- Keeping abreast of changes in laws, regulations and professional auditing standards;
- Communicating new, and/or changes to existing methodology/standards;
- Developing guidance on methodology issues;
- Participating in the maintenance of the Audit Manual; and
- Developing generic Detailed Audit Programs (DAPs) as required.
2. Developing, maintaining and executing the Audit Department’s Quality Assurance Program, including coordinating the review of audit working paper files and databases through a peer review process, and ensuring that recommendations for improving the overall quality of audits are effectively developed and communicated to the various audit groups as well as to the Chief Auditor.
3. Developing, maintaining and overseeing the Audit Department’s Global Training Strategy, including developing training materials and delivering training sessions to Audit Department staff globally.
4. Assisting in the coordination of the annual audit planning process by conducting quality assurance reviews of risk assessments, business overviews, resource requirements and audit strategies.
5. Identifying opportunities for enhancing the operational effectiveness of the global audit function by:
- Obtaining and developing a good understanding of the business, risks and processes for assigned projects/processes;
- Preparing written communications that clearly and concisely outline concerns and recommendations that support the betterment of the global audit function; and
- Assisting the implementation of approved projects within budgeted time.
6. Acting as the Compliance Officer for the Audit Department, and working closely with the Wealth, Insurance & Compliance Audit Group, the Back-up Compliance Officer and with Group Compliance, will be responsible for:
- Providing guidance and information to staff on regulatory matters impacting the global audit function; and
- Coordinating the quarterly compliance reporting requirements for the global audit function (i.e., obtaining confirmations from senior audit management and reporting any new findings, regulatory matters etc. that impact the global audit function to Group Compliance via ScotiaTrakker).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Working knowledge of the banking industry, internal and/or external audit processes and methodologies
- Working knowledge of the IIA Standards and the COSO Internal Control Framework and COBIT
- Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and audit software tools (such as TeamMate)
- Ability to write clear and concise internal and external communications
- Project management experience
EDUCATION AND ACCREDITATIONS:
- Professional Accounting Designation (CA, CPA, or CMA)
OTHER INFORMATION:
- The position is located in Toronto; however, there may be limited travel for domestic or international assignments and/or projects.
